Just because you have hired movers to do a job for you does not mean that you should not treat them with respect and courtesy. Here are some etiquette tips to ensure that the move goes smoothly and your movers are happy.
Make sure that the move starts on time. The movers are working on a tight schedule, so you should be sure that you are ready on the day and time agreed upon. If something urgent comes up and you are not available, ask somebody to take over for you to guide the movers. Also keep in mind that if the move is delayed because of you, you may be charged extra.
If a box contains fragile items, make sure that you tell the movers or you label the box clearly. This will help avoid accidents since the movers will know that they need to handle that particular box with care.
Make sure that the movers have free access to the premises. If parking is not available in front of your house, tell the movers in advance where they can park. Also, make sure they know about any local limitations on moving and parking.
Allow the movers to do their job. If you have hired experienced professionals, you can be sure that they know what theyre doing. So make sure that you get out of the way so they can work unhampered.
Keep yourself available. Although you should let them do their job, you should also not disappear on them. They might have questions about certain items.
Provide them with the essentials. The movers are working hard for you, so the least you can do is provide refreshments. Make sure they have access to water and a supply of coffee. If possible, you should also provide them with a light lunch. Also, designate a clean bathroom for their use with supplies such as paper towels and hand sanitizers.
Make sure to tip them appropriately. Since the movers are employees of the moving company, they do not expect you to tip them. If you choose to do so, you should make sure the amount reflects your appreciation for their efforts.
If you are still unsure as to how much to tip, the general rule of thumb is $25 to $50 for every move. You can adjust this based on how many staircases they had to climb and how satisfied you are overall with their performance.
